CLIMATE
The Netherlands has a maritime climate, with cool summers and mild winters. The average temperature is 2° C (36° F ) in January and 19° C (66° F ) in July, with an annual average of about 10° C (50° F ). Clouds generally appear every day, and in the winter months fog often abounds, while rainfall occurs frequently. Average annual rainfall is about 76.5 cm (30 in). The mild, damp climate is ideal for dairying and livestock raising, but the limited sunshine restricts the growing of food crops.
THE CIRCUIT
With more than 100,000 visitors on the competition day, the Assen TT has been the biggest one-day sports events in the Netherlands for decades. The TT stands for tradition and a very full day with competitions in all classes. TT Circuit Assen offers visitors an attractive circuit with a clearly visible layout. Visibility is further enhanced by ten Big Screen Vidiwalls, which ensure that everyone has a full view of the competition's progress. We offer a unique atmosphere, modest admission fees and more than 8 hours of excitement. In short, there are plenty of reasons why you should attend the Dutch TT in Assen; the Grand Prix for racing bikes in the Netherlands.
To the hundreds of thousands of bike fans and the tens of thousands of day trippers who visit the TT every year on the last Saturday in June, the Dutch TT is what Monaco is to the Formula 1 fans, and Wimbledon to tennis enthusiasts. In fact, TT Circuit Assen has not lost any of its attraction and atmosphere, which means that it compares favourably with the modern, concrete eyesores at other Grand Prix circuits. The track, which dates from 1955 and whose foundations were laid during the first Dutch TT in 1925, forms an integral part of the surrounding natural area. Following a major renovation project, which started in September 1998 and was completed in the spring of 2008, the TT Circuit is now among the best in the world.
Improvements were made to the track and the facilities for riders and the press, and also to the facilities for our visitors. A large part of the seating area with 56,000 seats has been completely renovated or rebuilt. An eye-catching element is the 'floating' Geert Timmer Tribune, where the safety zone extends to below the stand, which is unique in the world. In the circuit's shortened northern loop, the 'Noordlus', the new Strubben Tribune was opened in 2007.
In 2008, the TT World Tribune, consisting of three stands with a capacity of 1,000 seats each, was also completed. In addition to these facilities for spectators, we have also improved the parking areas. Motorbike riders have already been able to benefit several times from the unique asphalted bike parking area at the rear of the main stand, and since 2007 car drivers have been able to use the 6,000 parking spaces that were built at an average walking distance of 100 metres from the circuit.
